What's this for?

The core competencies provide a benchmark for the core skills and knowledge children should have about nutrition and being active. They are a guide and are not part of the national curriculum.

In the classroom

You can use the core competencies as a guide to help you plan your lesson activities, and make sure children are learning and developing core skills in areas such as:

  • Diet and health
  • Consumer awareness
  • Cooking
  • Food safety
  • Active lifestyles

Try this!

Why not use the core competencies to help you plan skill progression into your lessons and benchmark what stage children are at?

This is a really useful resource to show what children should be able to accomplish at different ages.
